Pass It On

In a Peanuts cartoon Lucy demanded that Linus change TV channels, threatening him with her fist if he didn’t. “What makes you think you can walk right in here and take over?” asks Linus. “These five fingers,” says Lucy. “Individually they’re nothing but when I curl them together like this into a single unit, they form a weapon that is terrible to behold.”

“Which channel do you want?” asks Linus. Turning away, he looks at his fingers and says, “Why can’t you guys get organized like that?”

This is a cute and expresses the misconception that many people think about unity. Unity does not happen, just because we have the ability to organize. It expresses itself as people move together for a common cause or goal.  We could look alike and all wear the same clothes and still not be in unity as the Psalmist described in Psalm 133, and Jesus prayed in John 17.  In other words, the goal of unity calls for a new paradigm that begins with a new heart and mind.  It is an opportunity to yield to the will of God. It is good and it is pleasant. It’s beauty is pleasant, and it’s results are good harmonious living.

Imagine that we are all driving to a destination that we may be familiar with.  As we are approaching the entrance ramp there is a yield sign facing us to give us an indication that we should slow down…stop if we must. As we stop to see who is going ahead of us, we notice that it is Jesus.  We are sure that He knows the way, so we all follow him as closely as we can.   He may seem a little distant, but keep  your eyes focused on the one leading the way.  Can you feel the intensity of the drive to stay alert?

It is true that all of us may have known a different route, and are tempted to follow our own way, we are safe when we all follow as one caravan.  That is the spirit of  unity.  Jesus wants people to know that he is leading us and success depends upon him.  Left to ourselves, we would go our own way.  Jesus passed this idea of oneness to his disciples, who passed it on to us.  We must continue passing it on and point everyone we can to yield to Jesus..follow him, and that will be how we all stay connected to one another.

Jesus prayed, “Father I pray that they would be one as we are one, then the world will know that you sent me.”  God Bless You!

Looking forward to our fellowship at Hop Brook on Sunday.
